Dominican Republic hit by two earthquakes in less than 12 hours

The Dominican Republic experienced significant seismic activity on Sunday, September 27, 2026, with two major tremors occurring within a twelve-hour period. The first earthquake, measuring 4.3 magnitude, struck at 6:07 AM near San Antonio de Guerra, Santo Domingo, at a depth of approximately 95.7 km.

A second, stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 occurred at approximately 5:49 PM near Ramón Santana, San Pedro de Macorís. This tremor was felt widely across the country, including Santo Domingo, Santiago, and the eastern region. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of approximately 108 to 113 kilometers.

Following the afternoon tremor, the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) activated Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (EDAN) protocols. While the seismic activity caused panic and led to preventive evacuations at locations such as the Santo Domingo International Book Fair and Plaza Sambil, authorities reported no significant material damage or casualties as of the latest updates.

The events have sparked public debate regarding the effectiveness of the government's Cell Broadcast earthquake alert system. Many citizens reported that they did not receive mobile notifications during the tremors. The COE clarified that the system is still in the implementation phase and is not yet 100% operational across all telecommunications providers.
