Earthquake of magnitude 5.9 strikes near Dunhuang, China

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck approximately 269 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang in northwest China on August 18, 2026. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The epicenter was located in a remote area, away from major urban centers. While the USGS ShakeMap indicated a maximum shaking intensity of VII (considered “very strong”), the PAGER system issued a yellow alert, suggesting a low probability of fatalities.

Potential impacts were noted for several localities, including Golmud and Dangcheng. The seismic activity in this region is attributed to the tectonic collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. No immediate reports of casualties or significant economic damage have been confirmed.
