Earthquake south of Africa occurs far from South African coast

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurred south of Africa on Sunday, 20 September 2026, at a depth of approximately 10km. While a viral social media post claimed the tremor was only 500km from South Africa, seismic data from official agencies contradicts this.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the epicenter well offshore, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) placed the event approximately 1,681km south-southeast of Gqeberha and roughly 1,942km southeast of Cape Town.

Different monitoring agencies reported slight variations in magnitude as data was processed. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded a different magnitude, a common occurrence in seismic monitoring. The USGS noted that earthquakes below magnitude 6.5 are very unlikely to trigger a tsunami.
