Earthquake strikes off the coast of Nordland, Norway

A significant earthquake struck the waters off the coast of Nordland, Norway, on Wednesday night. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude between 4.5 and 4.6, while NORSAR's automatic measurements indicated a magnitude of 3.8.

The epicenter was located in the sea, approximately 32 to 40 kilometers west of Ørnes in Meløy municipality, at a depth of about 10 kilometers. The tremors were felt widely across the region, including in Korgen, Helgeland, Saltdal, Sandnessjøen, Mosjøen, Mo i Rana, Nesna, Bodø, and Fauske, as well as on the island of Leka in Nord-Trøndelag.

Local police in Bodø reported receiving numerous calls from concerned citizens and noted that staff felt the vibrations within their buildings. As of the latest reports, no injuries or structural damages have been documented. NORSAR stated that while such earthquakes are not uncommon, the specific position and depth made this one particularly noticeable. Experts clarified that this event is unrelated to previous seismic activity in Eastern Norway.
