Earthquake threatens employment and microenterprises in Colombia

An earthquake has significantly impacted microenterprises and employment in the Colombian regions of Valle, Chocó, Risaralda, Quindío, and Caldas. According to Confecámaras, these affected areas host approximately 269,786 companies and 1,396,020 formal jobs.

The economic damage is expected to be severe because 93% of these businesses are microenterprises, totaling 250,628 units. Experts note that the impact will vary by region; for instance, Chocó faces high unemployment and informality, whereas Cali possesses a more formal labor market. Reconstructing the micro-entrepreneurial fabric in these regions is expected to be a difficult process.
