Earthquake victims protest at Court of Cassation for justice

The Adalet Peşinde Aileleri Platform (Families Seeking Justice Platform) held a protest in front of the Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) ahead of the opening of the new judicial year. Earthquake victims and their families are demanding accountability for the February 6 disasters, which resulted in at least 53,000 deaths.

Platform spokesperson Döne Kaya raised several critical questions regarding the response of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The platform noted that AFAD had prepared risk assessment reports (IRAP) between 2019 and 2021 predicting high-magnitude earthquakes, yet the agency was reportedly uncoordinated and absent from Hatay and Adıyaman during the first three days of the disaster.

Protesters also called on the Ministry of Interior to lift the immunity of public officials named in earthquake-related investigations. Specific cases were highlighted, including a fugitive technical supervisor sentenced in the İsias Hotel case and delayed indictments for incidents at İskenderun State Hospital and the Rana and Arı apartment buildings.
