Earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia reveal state response gaps

Recent earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia have highlighted significant differences in the capacity of each state to respond to natural disasters. While the seismic events themselves are indiscriminate, the subsequent emergency management reveals the structural quality of the respective governments.

In Venezuela, the earthquake on June 24 exposed a lack of preparedness for large-scale emergencies. The response was characterized by a deficiency in specialized equipment, established protocols, effective communications, logistics, and inter-agency coordination.
