Nurdağı earthquake strikes Gaziantep with 4.5 magnitude
A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Nurdağı district of Gaziantep at 03:42, with its effects felt in Kilis, Kahramanmaraş, Osmaniye, and Hatay. According to AFAD, the tremor occurred at a depth of 7.44 kilometers. While Kandilli Rasathanesi reported a slightly higher magnitude of 4.6 at a depth of 9.2 kilometers, AFAD confirmed that no casualties or property damage were reported. Geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür noted that the earthquake occurred on the Amanos Fault, a previously active region, and stated that a larger earthquake is not expected there.
In other seismic news, minor tremors were recorded across Turkey on August 9, 2026, in regions including Amasya, Sivas, and Çorum.
Regarding earthquake preparedness, AFAD Istanbul Director Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener announced that approximately 17,000 volunteers in Istanbul have completed field training to assist in the event of a major earthquake in the Marmara Sea.
Additionally, in Balıkesir's Sındırgı district, reconstruction efforts following the 6.1 magnitude earthquakes of August 2025 are nearing completion.
