Earthquakes recorded near Calabria and southern Tyrrhenian Sea
Two seismic events were recorded in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea and along the southwestern Calabrian coast on the morning of October 8, 2026.
The first earthquake, measuring magnitude 2.4 ML, occurred at 04:04:03 local time at a depth of 11 kilometers. Its epicenter was located near the Calabrian coast, approximately 6 kilometers from Palmi and 7 kilometers from Gioia Tauro.
A second, more powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 ML occurred later at 05:42:50. This event was characterized by its significant depth of 372 kilometers, with its epicenter located at sea. Geologists note that deep earthquakes in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea are linked to the subduction process of the Ionian lithosphere under the Calabrian arc.
