Earthquakes strike off Vancouver Island near Port Hardy

Two earthquakes occurred overnight in the waters off Vancouver Island's North Island. According to Earthquakes Canada, the first tremor measured a 4.9 magnitude and occurred at 9:41 p.m. on September 27, approximately 166 kilometres west-southwest of Port Hardy. A second earthquake, measuring 5.2 magnitude, was recorded at 2:13 a.m. on September 28 at a depth of 10 km, located 148 kilometres west-southwest of Port Hardy.

These seismic shifts are considered part of normal coastal movement but serve as a reminder for residents to prepare for regional hazards such as tsunamis and extreme weather. Prepared BC recommends reviewing and restocking emergency supplies, including food, water, and medications, twice a year. The events precede the Shake Out BC mass earthquake drill scheduled for October 15 at 10:15 a.m., where residents are encouraged to practice the “drop, cover and hold on” technique.
