Venezuela’s northern region hit by aftershocks, prompting evacuations

A magnitude‑3.9 tremor struck the north of Venezuela on July 10 at 10:53 a.m. local time (14:53 GMT). The quake’s epicenter was about 10 km northeast of Naiguatá in the state of La Guaira, at a depth of 5.5 km. No casualties or material damage have been reported, but the shaking prompted the evacuation of commercial and office buildings in Caracas, with residents fleeing to streets in districts such as La Candelaria, Los Ruices, Plaza Venezuela, Chacao and Altamira.

The following night, July 11, a magnitude‑3.6 event was recorded off the La Guaira coast, and a separate magnitude‑3.1 tremor was also reported in the same state. Authorities and the Fundación Venezolana de Investigaciones Sismológicas (Funvisis) continue to monitor the area, urging the public to remain calm and follow civil‑defence protocols.

These aftershocks occur as Venezuela continues to cope with the devastating June 24 double earthquake that killed more than 4,100 people, wounded 16,740 and left roughly 17,000 without homes. The government has deployed tens of thousands of military personnel and volunteers to support relief and reconstruction efforts.
