EASA extends Gulf airspace flight warnings until September 2026
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has extended its warning for civil aviation over the Gulf region until September 30, 2026. The updated guidance covers the airspaces of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, citing heightened geopolitical risks following military escalations between the United States and Iran.
In a shift from previous advisories, EASA has narrowed its recommendation. While it previously advised avoiding the entire airspace of these nations, it now states that takeoff and landing operations may be performed at airports within the affected flight information regions, provided that sufficient risk mitigation measures are implemented. However, airlines are advised to exercise caution when flying over land and to avoid the waters of the Gulf of Oman within the Muscat flight information region.
Additionally, EASA has extended its recommendation to avoid the airspaces of Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon until the end of September. An exception is made for flights to or from Beirut, provided the approach or departure occurs over the sea. The agency also rescinded its previous recommendation to avoid Jordanian airspace, though it advises continued caution there through September 30.
Risks cited by the agency include missile and drone attacks, Iranian efforts to control the Strait of Hormuz, and attacks on commercial vessels. EASA also warned that high alert levels of national and US air defense systems increase the risk of misidentifying civil aircraft.
