East Africa prepares infrastructure for AFCON 2027
As East Africa prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), host nations are focusing on stadium infrastructure and tourism integration. In Zanzibar, the Amaan Stadium has undergone modernization to meet international standards. Located near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Stone Town, the 15,000-capacity venue is positioned to offer fans a combination of football and cultural tourism.
In Uganda, the government is investing over USD 300 million to rebuild and expand three stadiums: the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, a new 20,000-seat stadium in Hoima, and the Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira. However, experts have raised concerns regarding the long-term commercial viability of these venues. There are calls to develop integrated sport and entertainment districts to prevent the stadiums from becoming public liabilities once the tournament concludes.
