East African governments advance regional road infrastructure projects

Governments in Uganda and Tanzania are advancing road infrastructure projects to improve regional connectivity and economic activity.

In Uganda, the Ministry of Works and Transport has intensified field monitoring of road networks in the Southern Region. Led by Assistant Commissioner for Road Maintenance Eng. Racheal Ngonzebwa, the inspection covered stations in Ibanda, Kasese, Kabale, and Mbarara. The initiative involves technical teams and local leaders assessing road conditions and identifying maintenance needs to ensure accessibility for local communities.

In Tanzania, the Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has urged the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to accelerate the construction of the 73-kilometre Kahama–Kakola Road. Funded by Barrick-Twiga’s Bulyanhulu and North Mara mines at a cost of 101.2 billion Tanzanian shillings, the project aims to upgrade the road to bitumen standard. Currently, 32 kilometres of the road have been paved, and the project is being supervised by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS).
