East African health initiatives expand cancer screening and awareness

Health officials and community organizations in East Africa are intensifying cancer screening and awareness efforts to improve early detection rates.

In Kilifi County, Kenya, 126 breast cancer cases were recorded between 2025 and 2026, representing 22 percent of all reported cancer cases in the region. To address this, the county government is partnering with stakeholders like the Steps of Hope organization to expand outreach through mobile clinics and community initiatives, particularly in rural areas where access to diagnosis is limited.

In Arusha, Tanzania, a collaborative screening camp led by the Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Kaloleni Hospital, and the local Member of Parliament provided services to 621 residents. The exercise identified various health concerns, including breast, cervical, and prostate cancer indicators, resulting in 16 referrals for specialized medical assessment. These initiatives aim to bring diagnostic services closer to communities and educate the public on non-communicable diseases.
