East African women advocate for climate justice and land rights

Efforts to address gender-specific vulnerabilities are intensifying in East Africa through climate justice advocacy and land rights initiatives. In Nairobi, Kenya, women living in informal settlements are calling for improved disaster responses as El Niño rains approach. Residents report that previous flooding exposed critical gaps in access to essential resources, such as sanitary products, and highlighted the lack of accessible climate information and safe shelters for vulnerable groups, including the physically disabled.

In Magwi County, South Sudan, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has concluded a training program designed to promote women’s land rights. Through the Building Women’s Economic Resilience for Sustainable Peace (BWERSP) Project, the initiative engages ‘male champions’ to challenge discriminatory social norms and support inclusive land governance. The program aims to strengthen women's economic resilience by involving men in the advocacy for equitable access to and control of land within their communities.
