East Coast Main Line launches first digital signaling service

The East Coast Main Line has entered a new digital era with the first passenger service utilizing in-cab European Train Control System (ETCS) signaling between Welwyn and Hitchin. On August 31, a Great Northern service became the first to operate under this system, marking a major milestone for the £1.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP).

The ECDP aims to replace traditional trackside signals with a digital system that transmits speed and distance information directly to the driver's cab. This transition is designed to improve efficiency, reliability, and environmental impact by reducing reliance on physical trackside equipment. The system also enhances safety by monitoring train speeds and providing automatic braking if necessary.

The initial operational phase covers a 15-mile section using an “overlay” approach, allowing trains to run using either conventional or digital signaling. Great Northern Class 717 trains are currently being used to facilitate this transition and train operators, with full system expansion projected to continue through 2027.
