East German states coordinate on rural mobility and infrastructure
Transport ministers from East German states are coordinating efforts to modernize regional mobility and infrastructure. Following a working meeting in Gera, officials aim to present unified positions to the federal government regarding innovation, financing, and the expansion of transport networks, particularly in rural areas.
Key priorities include developing East Germany into an innovation hub through pooled competencies in autonomous and networked driving. The ministers are also advocating for reliable financing for rail transport, a reduction in rising track prices, and the preservation of long-distance services in rural regions. Discussions also addressed demographic changes, the need for flexible mobility options, and addressing existing infrastructure deficits.
In rural areas, the transition to sustainable mobility remains a challenge. Data from the German Environment Agency indicates that in 2023, approximately two-thirds of all trips in rural regions were made by car, resulting in per capita emissions 60 percent higher than the urban average. Experts suggest addressing this through the ‘three Vs’ approach: avoiding, shifting, and improving transport, utilizing tools such as on-demand buses, safe cycling paths, and improved public transit to support an aging population and those without vehicles.
