East Hampshire history: Early British military airship flights

Historical accounts detail the early development of British military aviation through airship experimentation in the early 20th century. Beginning in 1902 with the powered airship 'Nulli Secundus,' the British military explored the potential of airships for reconnaissance, communication, and observation.

Records from 1911 and 1913 highlight sightings of airships over East Hampshire, including the Alton and East Tisted areas. Notably, Airship No. 4, which was manufactured in Germany and acquired by Britain in 1912, conducted trial flights from Farnborough to the Isle of Wight. These operations were part of broader efforts by the Royal Aircraft Factory to develop military aviation capabilities during a period when both heavier-than-air and lighter-than-air flight were being actively pursued.
