East Java City Councils Take Divergent Stances on New Local Regulations

The Malang City Council’s PKB faction abstained from voting on the draft ordinance for the 2025 regional budget accountability, citing concerns over budget deficits, vacant posts, market issues, and public services. Party leader Saniman Wafi said the abstention was a political responsibility to ensure every budget rupiah benefits the community.

Meanwhile, the Batu City Council and its municipal government approved three strategic draft regulations covering village governance, protection of women and children from violence, and the management of infrastructure and utilities. Council spokesperson Agung Sugiyono said the new rules align with the national Village Law and aim to improve transparency, accountability, and sustainable development in the district.

Both actions reflect a broader push by local authorities in East Java to overhaul governance frameworks ahead of the 2025 fiscal year.
