East Java declares drought emergency in 22 regions
Twenty-two regencies and cities in East Java have declared drought emergency or alert status due to the 2026 dry season. The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of East Java reports that the drought potential extends to 29 regencies, 260 districts, and 926 villages.
Estimates suggest that approximately 1.58 million people, or 489,608 households, could be affected by the water shortage. While most areas are under emergency alert status, Mojokerto, Lumajang, and Situbondo have moved to emergency response status.
To mitigate the crisis, the BPBD is coordinating the distribution of clean water, with a planned quota of 5,410 shipments of 5,000 liters each. Additional logistical support includes the provision of 50 water tanks, 100 folding tanks, and 9,600 tarpaulins to assist affected residents and support agricultural irrigation to prevent crop failure.
