Indonesia energy companies secure long-term LNG and coal supplies
PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has secured a long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply from the Masela Working Area. The agreement provides 2.5 million tonnes per annum for 18 years, totaling 37.5 million tonnes or approximately 600 cargoes. This supply is expected to begin in late 2030 to support PLN Group power plants and ensure national energy security.
In a separate operational update, PT PGN LNG Indonesia reported receiving 25 LNG cargoes totaling 67.24 million MMBTU through the third quarter of 2026. This represents a 34.72% year-on-year growth in Ex-LNG distribution volume. The company utilized the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) Lampung to maintain these operations.
Additionally, PLN EPI projected a requirement of 174 million tonnes of coal for 2025 to supply steam power plants (PLTU). The company noted a mismatch between the domestic availability of low-rank coal and the medium-rank coal required by current plant designs, prompting plans to invest in upgrading plant technology to utilize available domestic resources.
