East Java Governor Khofifah Orders Officials to Monitor Food Prices After Market Spikes
Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa of East Java directed all regents and mayors to visit traditional markets and directly monitor the prices of essential food items. The instruction was given during a site visit to Pasar Klojen in Malang on 29 May, emphasizing rapid response if price surges or shortages occur.
The inspection found medium‑grade SPHP rice absent from shelves despite a provincial stock of 3.2 million tonnes, while the cooking oil "Minyakita" was selling above the government‑set Highest Retail Price. Prices of chili rawit reached Rp100,000‑Rp120,000 per kilogram and red onion climbed to Rp55,000‑Rp60,000 per kilogram. Other staples such as other chili varieties, garlic, eggs and chicken were stable.
Khofifah called for intensified coordination among the provincial trade agency, Malang city authorities and the state rice corporation Bulog, and highlighted the role of inter‑regional cooperation (KAD) to mitigate inflationary pressure from these commodity spikes.
