East Java Police arrest 11 suspects during Surabaya protests
East Java Regional Police (Polda Jatim) arrested 11 individuals near the Grahadi State Building in Surabaya during a demonstration on Thursday, October 22, 2026. According to East Java Police Chief Irjen Pol Dekananto Eko Purwono, the suspects were detained to prevent them from hijacking the peaceful student protests to incite riots.
The detainees include two students and nine school dropouts. In a separate incident in Yogyakarta, the Yogyakarta Regional Police (Polda DIY) released 32 protesters who had been detained following clashes near the DIY DPRD Building on Tuesday night. Police officials stated the release was a discretionary measure to ensure participant safety and prevent further escalation. Authorities reported that the situation in the Malioboro area has since returned to normal.
