East Java students visit veterans to learn history

The East Java Education Office (Dindik Jatim) has launched an innovative program titled ‘Murid Menjemput Sejarah: 81 Tahun Indonesia Merdeka’ (Students Fetch History: 81 Years of Indonesian Independence). From August 12 to 16, 2026, students from high schools (SMA), vocational schools (SMK), and special needs schools (SLB) across 38 districts in East Java visited the homes of war veterans.

Head of the East Java Education Office, Aries Agung Paewai, stated that the initiative aims to move beyond textbook learning and formal ceremonies. By sitting with veterans and their families, students can hear firsthand accounts of the struggle for independence and observe the exemplary character of these historical figures.

As part of the visits, students brought gifts such as basic food supplies and blankets as a sign of respect. However, officials emphasized that the primary goal was to foster empathy, respect, and a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made for national independence. The program also resulted in students receiving historical messages from veterans through handwritten notes or short videos.
