East Kootenay launches regional hazard and vulnerability analysis

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has initiated a regional Hazard, Risk, and Vulnerability Analysis (HRVA) to assess potential threats and climate impacts. The project is being managed through the East Kootenay Emergency Management Program and involves seven partnering municipalities and various First Nations.

The analysis aims to combine regional rural data with climate change projections to identify which hazards are most likely to affect the region and which areas face the highest risks. This data will serve as a resource for coordinated planning, helping communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from various emergencies.

A public survey has been launched to gather community knowledge regarding hazard impacts, existing risk reduction measures, and local vulnerabilities. The survey is open until October 25, 2026, to help inform future resilience efforts and emergency planning.
