East Kootenay lightning strikes ignite two new wildfires
Two new wildfires caused by lightning strikes have been contained in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia.
The first fire occurred on August 12 near the outskirts of Marysville, adjacent to the St. Mary’s River and across from the Bootleg Gap Golf Course. B.C. Wildfire reported the blaze was 0.09 hectares and is currently under control.
A second fire was ignited by lightning at approximately 7:15 a.m. on August 13 just east of Highway 95. A team of seven firefighters from the Edgewood Fire Department responded to the incident. Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Chief Drew Sinclair stated the fire was confined to a small area, though crews will remain on site for mop-up operations.
Despite recent rainfall, the Regional District of East Kootenay warns that dry conditions are expected to return, which may lead to additional fire starts in the coming days.
