East Kootenay to adopt permanent Mountain Daylight Time

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors has voted to end semi-annual time changes, opting to remain on permanent Mountain Daylight Time (MDT). The 12-3 decision follows a regional survey in which 89% of respondents expressed a desire to stop seasonal clock changes, with 66% specifically preferring permanent daylight time.

The decision keeps the region aligned with Alberta rather than the majority of British Columbia. Board members cited several factors for the choice, including strong economic and social ties to Alberta in areas like Elk Valley and Crowsnest Pass, as well as considerations regarding public safety, school crossings, and business schedules. Additionally, the survey indicated a preference for more daylight in the evenings to support local recreation and outdoor activities.

While the decision was not unanimous, board chair Rob Gay noted that the survey results carried significant weight in the final determination.
