East Lothian approves expansion of ASN classrooms in mainstream schools
East Lothian Council has approved plans to expand additional support needs (ASN) classroom spaces in mainstream schools following significant parental support. The initiative will increase the number of ASN units across the county from six to nine, providing 122 additional places.
The new provisions will be established at Musselburgh Grammar School, Stoneyhill Primary School in Musselburgh, and Law Primary School in North Berwick. These areas currently lack available ASN classrooms.
Officials noted that the expansion is expected to save approximately £9 million annually by reducing the need to transport children to specialist classes outside the county. The move aims to provide a more equitable distribution of resources and allow students to access specialist education closer to home.
