East Lothian lifts first-ever barbecue ban amid wildfire risk

East Lothian Council lifted the ban on barbecues and campfires that it introduced last week after Scottish Fire and Rescue warned of a "very high risk" of wildfires while battling a blaze in the Cairngorms. The ban covered all public countryside and coastal sites, but officials now ask visitors to keep any fires on beaches only.

Rangers reported a few people still lighting fires or leaving them unattended, and they continued to educate the public on fire safety. The Cairngorms fire has burned for nearly two weeks, destroying about 10 square miles of moorland and forest, and a separate wildfire was recently tackled at Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park.
