East Macedonia and Thrace launch livestock disease prevention project
The East Macedonia and Thrace Region has launched a collaborative project with ELGO-DEMETER titled ‘Addressing Transboundary Threats in Livestock: Entry and Spread Risk Points of Diseases in the East Macedonia and Thrace Region’. The initiative focuses on the prevention and scientific documentation of zoonotic diseases.
With a total budget of 300,000 euros—funded by the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace (200,000 euros) and the Ministry of Rural Development and Food (100,000 euros)—the project will conduct sampling in farms and slaughterhouses, perform laboratory analyses, and investigate the role of wildlife and arthropods in pathogen transmission. The project aims to strengthen surveillance due to the region's extensive land borders with Turkey and Bulgaria.
