A severe summer storm hit the Mani region in southern Greece on August 15, 2026, causing widespread flooding and significant infrastructure damage. The National Observatory of Athens recorded 141 mm of rainfall in Kokkala within a four-hour period, a volume described as ten times the August average for the area.

The intense weather included over 2,000 electrical discharges between 14:00 and 20:00. One woman was injured after being struck by lightning while inside her vehicle in Oitylo; she was treated at the Sparta General Hospital.

Emergency services received approximately 50 calls for assistance. Firefighters intervened in at least 10 cases to rescue individuals trapped in vehicles by rising floodwaters. The storm caused major damage to the road network, including a 20-meter section of road destroyed in Kokkala, and left many roads impassable due to mud, rocks, and debris. Settlements such as Oitylo, Karavostasi, Alypa, Limeni, and Portokagio were among those most heavily affected.
