Eastern Mediterranean Team announces weather names for 2026-2027

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), in collaboration with the national meteorological services of Cyprus and Israel, has released the list of names for extreme weather systems for the period of October 2026 through September 2027.

Operating as the Eastern Mediterranean Team, these agencies meet frequently to discuss numerical weather models and observational data. This coordination allows them to assign names to anticipated intense weather phenomena to ensure accurate and timely public warnings. The naming system, which originated in Europe in 1995 and is part of the EUMETNET network, aims to alert citizens via mass media and social networks, assisting emergency response agencies in protecting lives and property.

The 24 selected names, which reflect the linguistic identity of the participating countries using Latin characters, are: Argos, Bar, Chabrias, Dorothea, Eitan, Filippa, Glafkos, Hadar, Ikaros, Jason, Kedem, Laskarina, Morfeas, Nadia, Odysseas, Persefoni, Roxani, Sisyfos, Tamar, Uranos, Vergina, Wasim, Xanthe, and Ypnos.
