East Midlands Railway extends digital ticketing trial

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is extending its Digital Pay As You Go trial for an additional 12 months. The program, which operates between Leicester, Derby, and Nottingham, has already facilitated over 27,000 journeys involving 1,492 customers.

The trial utilizes GPS-based technology within the EMR app to automatically track passenger journeys and calculate the correct fares. This system removes the need for travelers to select and purchase specific tickets prior to boarding. The app has maintained a customer satisfaction rating of 4.4 out of 5.

Supported by the Department for Transport, the initiative is part of a broader industry effort to develop more flexible and intelligent ticketing options for rail passengers.
