East Midlands Railway faces calls for renationalisation

Lee Barron, the Labour MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire, has urged the transport secretary to terminate the contract of East Midlands Railway (EMR) and transfer its services to the planned Great British Railways (GBR). Barron cited constituent complaints regarding frequent service cancellations and reliability issues, noting that official data supports these concerns.

EMR, owned by Transport UK Group, has acknowledged that recent performance has fallen below expected standards. The company attributed the disruptions to extreme hot weather and wider rail network infrastructure issues. EMR stated it is investing £30 million to transform its EMR Connect fleet to improve reliability.

The operator is also facing challenges with its new Class 810 Aurora fleet. The RMT union has initiated industrial action, alleging that on-board safety systems are prone to failures that disrupt communication between drivers and control staff. While EMR maintains that the fleet meets all required safety standards, it is currently engaged in discussions with the RMT to resolve the dispute.
