Java Sea earthquake of magnitude 6.5 strikes north of Jakarta
A powerful deep-focus earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck the Java Sea, approximately 69 kilometers northeast of the Thousand Islands, Jakarta, on Saturday morning, September 12, 2026. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the quake occurred at 04:23 local time at a depth of approximately 368 kilometers.
Due to the significant depth, the earthquake was classified as an intraslab event caused by the subduction of the Australian Plate. BMKG confirmed that the tremor does not pose a tsunami threat. While the depth mitigated surface damage, the seismic waves were felt widely across Indonesia, including Jakarta, Tangerang, Banten, West Java, Yogyakarta, and as far as parts of Sumatra and East Java.
In response to the tremors, KAI Commuter Line temporarily suspended electric train (KRL) operations to conduct safety inspections on the tracks. Normal service gradually resumed after tracks were cleared. No immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage have been confirmed, though authorities continue to monitor for potential aftershocks and secondary impacts.
