East Potomac Golf Links redevelopment contracts awarded by National Park Service

Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee have accused the Trump administration of quietly awarding contracts to advance a plan to take over and redevelop the East Potomac Golf Links in Washington. Rep. Jared Huffman, the committee’s top Democrat, stated during a hearing that the National Park Service hired a civil engineering firm to begin work on the historic public course without notifying Congress or making a public announcement.

A contract valued at $389,355 was recently awarded to Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., a firm with offices in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., to conduct environmental and historic preservation compliance work. Additionally, the National Park Service has posted a projected construction contract worth up to $49 million, with solicitation expected to begin in late January 2027.

A lawsuit is currently challenging the redevelopment, arguing that the plan violates the congressional law that established the park more than a century ago. Critics, including Huffman, have characterized the effort as an attempt to convert a public resource into a private golf club for the wealthy at the expense of taxpayers.
