East Side Gallery to undergo restoration in Berlin

The East Side Gallery in Berlin-Friedrichshain is scheduled for restoration this autumn. The Berlin Wall Foundation has announced several conservation projects aimed at preserving both historical wall segments and significant artworks.

A primary focus is the conservation of the mural ‘Hands’ by Margaret Hunter and Peter Russell, which is the only original painting from the gallery remaining from 1990. Additionally, the artwork ‘Paradise out of the Darkness’ by Japanese artist Kikue Miyatake is set to return to the gallery after being held at a temporary location in a park since 1997.

The project also includes the restoration of hollow block wall segments from 1961 located near the 1977 border wall segments. These elements, which document the early phases of the Berlin Wall, will receive restorative treatment and additional graffiti protection.
