Tyrol mountains: German hiker dies in alpine accident

A 74-year-old German hiker from the Olpe district died following an alpine accident in the Venediger Group in Tyrol, Austria. The man had set out alone on a mountain tour via the Maurertal toward the Essener-Rostocker-Hütte on Monday morning.

After the man failed to return, his accommodation provider reported him missing on Monday evening. A large-scale search operation was launched involving the Salzburg police helicopter ‘Libelle FLIR’, drones, and mountain rescue teams from Prägraten equipped with search dogs. The search was hampered by heavy rain, strong winds, and darkness, forcing aerial units to suspend operations late Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, a police helicopter located the man's body at an altitude of approximately 2,270 meters near the Aderkammbach. Preliminary investigations suggest the hiker left the marked trail while descending from the Türmljoch, entered increasingly steep terrain, and subsequently fell over near-vertical rock faces.
