EastEnders features blood cancer storyline to highlight donor diversity

The BBC soap opera EastEnders is featuring a storyline centered on Denise Fox, a character played by Diane Parish, who is battling acute myeloid leukaemia. After chemotherapy failed to respond to the cancer, doctors have informed the character that a stem cell transplant is her best chance for survival, prompting a search for a donor within the community.

Actress Diane Parish has described the storyline as a standout moment in her 20-year tenure on the show. Developed in collaboration with Blood Cancer UK, the plot aims to highlight the critical difficulties minority ethnic groups face when searching for matching stem cell donors due to a lack of diversity in donor registries. Parish expressed a desire to champion causes such as the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) to address the low registration rates among minority populations.
