Easter Island Moai statues likely fall face-down, study finds
Researchers using advanced engineering modeling and computer simulations have gained new insights into why the iconic moai statues of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) toppled during past disturbances or earthquakes. The study suggests that the unique weight distribution and construction methods used by Rapa Nui artists caused the monolithic figures to fall face-down first.
These findings may assist in the preservation and conservation of similar monolithic structures globally. Rapa Nui remains a significant archaeological site where many statues have been returned to upright positions following decades of restoration efforts.
