Eastern Aegean islands see surge in Turkish tourism

Tourism from Turkey to the Greek islands of the Eastern Aegean remains strong, with over 260,000 Turkish visitors recorded in Lesvos, Chios, and Samos between January and August 20, 2026. Chios led the group with 100,447 arrivals, followed by Samos with 71,362, and Lesvos with 89,957. July was identified as the peak month for all three destinations.

Daily maritime connections from Turkish ports such as Ayvalik and Cesme facilitate this movement, including multi-day ferry routes and arrivals of private yachts. Air travel from Ayvalik also contributes to the increased connectivity.

To further engage the Turkish market, the Northern Aegean Region has approved a cycling tourism initiative. In September 2026, the Lesvos Cycling Club will host 15 members of Turkish cycling clubs as part of a ‘Peoples’ Friendship Festival’. This program aims to promote Lesvos through cultural, gastronomic, and historical experiences, utilizing the visitors as opinion leaders to enhance the island's appeal to Turkish tourists.
