Eastern Anatolia cats targeted by Russian merchants in 1923

Archival research by writer Taner Özdemir has uncovered a historical report from August 9, 1923, regarding an attempt by Russian merchants to purchase 10,000 cats from Eastern Anatolia.

According to the 171st issue of the Varlık Gazetesi, Russia faced a severe rodent infestation in its ports and grain warehouses along the Black Sea and Caspian Sea coasts. To combat this issue, a commission was formed to procure cats to protect food supplies and grain stocks.

The merchants targeted the Eastern Anatolia region, specifically Erzurum, Kars, and Sarıkamış, to source the animals. It is noted that cats from these areas were preferred due to their ability to withstand harsh winter climates and their strong hunting capabilities. Research continues to determine the final number of cats purchased and the prices paid during this historical trade event.
