Dominican Republic sees rising global profile amid economic growth
The Dominican Republic is experiencing significant shifts in its international profile and domestic needs. The country has been ranked as the third-best destination for winter beach vacations by HolidayCheck, noted for its warm waters and diverse attractions like Playa Bávaro and Pico Duarte.
Economically, the nation is seeing a transition in how it is perceived globally. The Dominican diaspora is increasingly recognized as a source of soft power and economic stability, contributing over $11.8 billion in remittances in 2025. This human capital, alongside steady macroeconomic growth of 4.5%, is positioning the country as a credible regional actor.
However, domestic challenges persist. In the eastern region, there is an urgent call for the construction of a dam to manage water scarcity for agriculture and tourism, as much of the rainfall is currently lost to runoff. Additionally, cultural and traditional sectors continue to evolve, such as the La Romana historical research project and the promotion of artisanal tobacco craftsmanship at international tourism fairs.
