Félix Tshisekedi pledges reparations and museum for GENOCOST victims
On 2 August 2026 the Democratic Republic of Congo marked the National GENOCOST Day, commemorating the millions killed in the eastern conflict. President Félix Tshisekedi, accompanied by First Lady Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, addressed the ceremony at the GENOCOST Memorial in Kinshasa. He announced that the government will allocate budget resources in the next fiscal year to fund reparations for survivors and ordered the operational launch of a national GENOCOST museum to preserve archives, testimonies and scientific research.
Tshisekedi condemned the aggression of Rwanda and the AFC/M23 rebel group, describing it as a murderous enterprise that threatens Congo’s sovereignty. Provincial Governor Iron‑Van Kalombo Musoko signed a petition urging international recognition of the genocide, while youth leaders in North Kivu launched a parallel petition and asked that the Kabila roundabout in Beni be renamed “Place Genocost”. The president also outlined a “diplomacy of memory” for Congolese missions abroad and clarified that the GENOCOST will be pursued as a crime of genocide under international law.
