Eastern European NATO members offer to increase funding for U.S. troops

Eastern European NATO members are offering to shoulder a larger portion of the costs for U.S. troops stationed on their territories. This initiative aims to discourage the Trump administration from reducing the American military presence in the region and to maintain a credible deterrent against Russia.

The proposal is expected to be presented during a NATO meeting in Brussels on August 27, which will include U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby. This move comes as the Pentagon conducts a six-month evaluation of its military presence in Europe.

As part of this evaluation, the U.S. has issued a questionnaire to European capitals, due by August 28. The document asks whether nations have “publicly supported” Trump’s foreign policy, if there are restrictions on using American military bases, and if funds are being allocated to U.S. defense companies.

Currently, U.S. troop levels in Europe fluctuate between 80,000 and 100,000 personnel. While over one-third are stationed in Germany, Eastern European nations host fewer, ranging from several hundred in the Baltic states to several thousand in Poland. Eastern flank members are expressing a firm desire to host more U.S. troops by offering increased financial support.
