Eastern Finland groundwater levels drop toward historic lows
Groundwater levels in Eastern Finland are dropping toward historic lows, increasing the risk of wells running dry. According to the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), levels in small groundwater formations in the region are currently 40–60 centimeters below the seasonal average. Particularly low levels have been recorded in North Karelia, South Savo, and Päijät-Häme.
In addition to Eastern Finland, large and medium-sized groundwater formations in Southern Finland are also experiencing low levels, sitting 20–60 centimeters below average. While rainfall has replenished levels in Western Finland, it has had no noticeable effect in the East. Hydrologist Sami Soosalu noted that multi-year drought conditions mean recovery will require a rainier autumn and a snowy winter.
The risk to private wells is significant; during the autumn of 2025, 60 dried-up wells were reported in Eastern Finland, and 20 have already been reported this summer. Experts warn that levels are approaching the lows seen last year and may continue to decline throughout early autumn unless heavy rainfall occurs.
