Eastern Main Road launches reversible-lane system to ease traffic

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has launched a reversible-lane system on the Eastern Main Road to alleviate traffic congestion between Mt Lambert and St Joseph. The project covers a 2.4 km section and utilizes dynamic lane controls managed remotely from the Traffic Management Headquarters in Caroni.

The system employs electronic lane indicators at ten points and three electronic message signs. Drivers must follow specific signals: a green arrow indicates an open lane, a red X signifies a closed lane, and a yellow X warns that lane operations are changing. Additionally, yellow turning arrows indicate lanes reserved exclusively for turning movements.

Officials, including Chief Traffic Engineer Adande Piggott and Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Eli Zakour, emphasized that the system's success depends on motorist compliance and alertness. The technology aims to increase road capacity and efficiency without physical expansion, with future evaluations planned based on accident rates and travel times.
