Eastern Mediterranean University leadership faces proposed removal and employment allegations

The government has proposed the removal of Şemi Bora, the Chairman of the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Foundation Board of Trustees (VYK), and member Turan Büyükyılmaz. According to a decision published in the Official Gazette, the Council of Ministers cited disruptions in work processes, cooperation, and coordination as the reasons for the proposed changes. The government has recommended appointing Anıl İmre as the new Chairman and Hasan Esen to replace Büyükyılmaz.

This move follows recent critical remarks by Bora, who had publicly criticized the management of EMU, stating that the institution was not being well-administered.

In response to allegations from the EMU-SEN union regarding political pressure to create new jobs and vacancies ahead of elections, Minister of Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu has denied any such claims. Çavuşoğlu stated that no requests for new employment or vacancies have been made and noted that no new staff have been hired at the university in the last three years. He also addressed allegations concerning the university's real estate, asserting that the administration is committed to protecting EMU's assets and preventing them from being improperly allocated to specific groups or individuals.
