Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus demands consultation on ALTO rail project
The Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC), representing 103 municipalities, has passed a resolution demanding transparency and meaningful consultation regarding the ALTO high-speed train project.
The EOWC is requesting that the Government of Canada and ALTO refrain from conducting discussions that impact municipalities during the upcoming municipal election period, which concludes on October 26, 2026. The group argues that holding such discussions during elections does not respect municipal democratic processes.
Additionally, the EOWC is calling for the creation of a Municipal Advisory Table. This body would include representatives from affected municipalities, First Nations, legal experts, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to collaborate on issues related to the project’s planning, land acquisition, construction, and operation.
